Archaeology in our area:
Mesa Verde National Park is open all year.  In addition, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the many other activities available in Mesa Verde Country - the archaeological center of America and a great sample of the west.
Anasazi Heritage Center Museum, Dolores, CO, 970-882-4811, open daily 9-5, includes  museum and two archaeological sites - admission $3/adult.
Cortez Cultural Center, Cortez, CO, 970-565-1151, Open Monday-Saturday, 10-10. During the summer, Indian Dances at 7:30 and Cultural Programs at 8:30, Free!
Canyon of the Ancients, Visitor information at Anasazi Heritage Center (above) - over 6000 ruins. Site is 10 miles north of Cortez and three miles west of Dolores. (Auto routes can be rough)
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, Cortez, CO, 970-565-8975, Day Programs   Wednesday and Thursday, reservations required. $50/ adult includes lunch.
Hovenweep National Monument - south and west of Cortez, 970-562-4282, Open daily  8-5, $6/car, access through McElmo Canyon Road or Dove Creek. Beautiful towers and remote archaeological sites.
Talking Stones Tours - If you liked Mesa Verde, you will love these tours: regular tours or custom all day tours of petroglyph panels, ruin sites, dinosaur tracks, museums, wild flowers, wildlife -- incredible sites most people don't even know exist.
Trail of the Ancients, Starting at Mesa Verde Nat'l Park, this details a road trip in Colorado and Utah to see incredible scenery and archaeology.
Ute Mountain Tribal Park, Towaoc, CO, 970-565-9653, Open daily for full-day and half-day tours, reservations required. Tours start at 8:30 am.  Cliff dwellings like those found in Mesa Verde National Park.
Lowry Pueblo, North and West of Cortez, 970-882-4811, open daily, Free, large Pueblo community and a Great Kiva, part of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument
Cowboy things:
Rimrock Outfitters Want to get in touch with the old west?  Before cars, there were horses and stagecoaches and wagons.  Lynn and Perry operate just east of Mancos, ready to take you in the mountains on horseback or coach. Open 7 days a week.
Canyon Trails Ranch: Visit ancient ruins and learn the history of the Puebloan people via horseback!  Canyon Trails Ranch offers scenic Colorado backcountry   horseback rides in spectacular McElmo Canyon.
High Country Elk Adventure: Well, not quite cowboy, but an interesting alternate.  3 hour tours ($40-65) through a 1500 acre preserve and research center.
Nathanials - Master Hat Maker in Mancos, incredible western hats custom made to fit your head as they did in the late 1800’s.
